I was strictly legal for the first four plus years then began to experiment with reintroducing illegals. I posted about it first here in April of 2009 and then here in May of 2010.

The May posting indicated that I was about 90% compliant with the diet. That helped me feel better and eventually I began to experiment a little more. I speculate that I’m closer to a 70% compliance now. I’ve found that sugars affect me much differently than grains. Eating sugars will likely increase my trips to the bathroom whereas grains are more likely to reduce my trips. I still do not get those Crohn’s cramps that I remember pre-SCD, but ironically, I will occasionally get discomfort from being a little too backed up.

I see my family doctor every year and have a SED rate test performed just to get a little objective measure of how I’m doing. I’m happy to say that I’m a five, well within the normal range of 0-15 for men.

Last update, May of 2010, here.

Pilot Testing a Novel Treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Study Objective: To assess the efficacy and feasibility of the Anti-Inflammatory Diet (IBD-AID) intervention for the treatment of IBD.

…

Conclusion: This case series indicates the potential for the IBD-AID to be used as an adjunctive or alternative therapy for the treatment of IBD.

The study is small and not double-blind so I don’t suppose your average GI may give it much creedence, but the study also concluded that “Notably, 9 out of 11 patients were able to be managed without anti-TNF therapy, and 100% of the patients had their symptoms reduced.”

Woo hoo, go food!

The concept of “Standard of Care” is a bit subjective. See this wikipedia entry for more, but the basic idea is that the standard of care is what any competent physician would do for that particular patient in that particular situation. This can vary somewhat with local practices. The American College of Gastroenterolgy provides clinical guidelines that GI’s can use along with their clinical experience and professional judgment to determine the course of treatment for your IBD. The ACG publishes these guidelines as a list on their website. You can find the list of guidelines here. Scroll down for the Crohn’s and colitis entries.

Of course other nations have their own professional associations:

Here are guidelines done for the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (ECCO) in 2008-2011.

Here is a guideline published by GUT, an International Journal of Gastroenterolgy and Hepatology in 2004.

Perhaps these published guidelines will be helpful when you are trying to understand the advice of your physician.

Research from the University of Bristol:

Scientists have been unclear for some time about how most probiotics work. A new study has found a scientific ‘design’ for a probiotic that could be used to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as Crohn’s disease.

I suspect most SCDers will take issue with some of the facts presented in this report, but one statement in particular surprised me:

Although probiotics have been shown to successfully maintain remission in IBD…

I didn’t know that medical science had proven that. Does your doctor know about this?

Another interesting point of the paper is that is agrees with Elaine’s views about iron and the gut. See this page for more.

The press release doesn’t name the probiotic is question, but it does say that the researchers have patented it. I don’t understand the law of patenting a living organism, particularly a preexisting one, but perhaps this sort of study will help “legitimize” SCD concepts and help bring it to a wider audience.

University of Bristol press release here.

Research article here.

Additionally, a search for ”streptococcus thermophilus” on breakingtheviciouscycle.info returns several hits:
