What could be more simple than that carton of orange juice you just brought home?

They just squeezed an orange and packaged the juice, right?

Not so fast.

If you’re not squeezing it yourself you might want to read about what goes into that carton. It’s sorta scarey –  the plain Tropicana that is legal for us SCDers doesn’t sound so good anymore.

    Hi Paul,

    I love your website! Very informative and allot of great information. My husband has UC and has been on all different medication with no relief for the past year. I found the book by accident doing a search on line about UC. I am on the diet with him to show my support. We have been on the diet for 4 weeks today and just this week he is showing improvement. He is still on many meds from the doctor and we go back to see him the end of March.
    He is not supportive of the diet he just smiled and said give it a try but no diet can cure UC. The meds he put my husband on the beginning of Feb. after a colonoscopy was suppose to help. When we
    saw him the end of Feb. he said my husband should have been 80% improved which he was not.

    Well the reason I am writing is two things. How long have you been on the diet and are you normal? I have been on a few listserv (I think thats what you call them) and no one sounds like their normal? So is it, your just better but not healed?
    That it just kind of keeps it in check and you may or may not be able to get off all the meds?

    My next question is we are going away in two weeks to N. Carolina to visit family. I called the airline and they said I can only bring 3oz of yougurt in my checked bag. So I’m thinking whats the sense. I order the capsules from Lucy’s kitchen today and hope he can just take those while were gone for 5 days.
    I am nervous about our trip, as after 4 weeks seeing some improvement, I’m just hoping he doesn’t go backwards.
    I did get a room with a kitchenette so I hope to make some foods there.

    Again thank you so much for this site. As you already know starting this diet is like relearning everything you thought you knew about cooking healthy. It’s been challenging to say the least. But if he gets better its worth every minute reading, searching and cooking.

    Thanks for your compliments.

    I’ve been on the SCD since 1/2005. I hit what I thought was remission 2-1/2 years into the diet. I recently had a colonoscopy and the biopsy came back as “active Crohn’s”. So clinically speaking, I am asymptomatic, but not in remission. The good thing is that I feel like I’m in remission. I just posted about this on my blog, so take a peek at it if you want more detail. I wasn’t on meds before the diet and I remain that way. I just suffered the symptoms before the diet.

    My presumption is that most of the talk on the listservs are mainly by people needing or giving advice. I suspect that most that are well from the diet don’t feel a need to continue on the groups. So it’s really hard to know if the talk on the groups is representative of the larger experience with the diet. I suppose it could go either way for someone who’s gotten better with the SCD – they may want to just put it all behind them, not thinking about it any more or they may be very vocal, wanting to help as many as they can.

    Either way, it seems pretty clear to me that people are helped by the SCD in a range from feeling cured to being helped by the diet, but still needing meds and all the shades in between.

    I’ve heard of people dripping their yogurt then packing it with blue ice in their checked baggage. See message 2294 on the BTVC-SCD group. The advantage of dripped yoghurt is you have less fear of it leaking.

    I understand your nervousness, it seems like any little thing you do can spell disaster doesn’t it? I know it’s easy to say, but try not to be nervous. The thing is, we all mess up. It’s part of the learning curve and learning about our bodies. Even if you do manage to avoid the common pitfalls, it’s not uncommon to have setbacks at 3, 6 and sometimes 9 months into the diet. Not to mention stress will exacerbate most any medical condition.

    The kitchenette is a great idea. I tried to carefully eat at restaurants in the first year of the diet, but gave it up altogether after I realized that is was very difficult to eat legally.
